YEsterday I had 2 people complain to me that they were not recieving emails from the outside. I went ahead and tested this from an outside email account and sure enough it never got to the user nor did i get a bounce back message. I have been checking the logs, but i dont know what to look for when people send messages from the outside. I went to Message tracking but it looks as though this only checks for things coming from the inside out. Is there another way i can looks to see if messages from certain outside email accounts ever made it to the exchange server?

If you have auditing set for this on your inbound gateways you can check the logs on those servers.

Update:

For quite a few of the bounce back messages it says that they were rejected because our users storage allocation had reached its maximum. Currently we have no restrictions for our users. We do however have a watchguard firebox and a Mcafee Webshield (e250). When we first installed exchange 2000 we noticed that some emails were not getting to us from certain domain names. I checked here and another place and found out that the watchguard firewall strips a certain piece of data that the E2K server needs before handing it off to the server. Because of this the E2K server would reject the mail. We corrected it by implementing the fix that my supervisor found on the watchguard site. Once we did that more emails were coming through (a couple times a week someone would complain of an email that did not come through). Since monday several people have complained that the emails are not coming through at all or even delayed (some by several hours, some by a couple days).

I am wondering if anyone is using a set up similiar to ours (with the watchguard firewall and mcafee web shield) and have noticed the same problems. The only thing i can think of is that the web shield is holding the email messages and then randomly letting some through while oter it rejects and yet other not even letting us know it came through. Any help is appreciated. I am also going to check the mcafee web site and the knowledge base.

Hey, we seem to be having a smiliar issue but we don't have mcafee. Just wondering if you had more info or a link to the watchguard fix you mentioned (I checked here and another place and found out that the watchguard firewall strips a certain piece of data that the E2K server needs before handing it off to the server. Because of this the E2K server would reject the mail. We corrected it by implementing the fix that my supervisor found on the watchguard site). We don't have maintenance with them anymore so I can't really call so if you have any info that could help, please let us know. Thanks, Joe.
