Emailing alerts in sharepoint

I want to start off saying I do not know anything about sharepoint 3.0. My company has had an sharepoint intranet for document management for staff in house. They use to have pop3 email accounts with Verio before switching to Intermedia hosted exchange. Now when they post updates in sharepoint it does not email the people that there has been a change. How do I get this feature back? Anything i can do? any work arounds?
 
If the email addresses changed, you need to create a new alert and add the new email addresses.

when I do that it says its not recognized.
