I have noticed this since upgradng to AVG7 Free edition.
If I attempt to send an email with an attachment AVG puts it (encrypted?) into a folder called QUEUE/ACTIVE.
and it dosnt get sent even though OE moves it to the 'sent' folder.
Next time the PC is started a dial-up happens and the email is sent.
It may have somthing to do with the way that AVG7 interacts with the server, as the AVG scanning dialog seems to show simultanious send and recive and the send information is relating to the mail that dosen't get sent. Its as if OE is timeing out on the send.
I am also not trotaly convinced that this isn't related with Zone alarm Pro which was installed at around the same time as the AVG upgrade.
Can anyone help? As this is extremly annoying.

Hi Steve --

What AVG email scanner type are you using please? And what permissions does the Email Scanner have in ZoneAlarm Pro? Is there anything showing up in the ZA or AVG logs? Post back with details and I'll do my best to assist.

I run AVG SMTP email scanner with Thunderbird and ZA (not Pro) on my laptop (which took me a day to configure correctly) so I feel your pain.

Hi TazUk

The scanner is the default 'personal email scanner' in the AVG control panel Version 7.0 Dated 7.7.2003 is this what you mean?

I cant get to the ZA settings or the AVG scanner logs until tonight, will post details tommorow.

Yep that's what I was after.
So you're using the Personal Email Scanner engine, which is SMTP based.

I've had a quick shufty round the AVG7 / ZoneLabs forums, and it seems likely that it may be a ZA configuration issue.

Assuming that the "AVG Email Scanner" is configured with permission to connect to the internet (and the ability to send email), the commonly suggested fix is to add your ISP's mail servers to the Trusted Zone within ZA. See here for similar problems. Personally I don't believe that's necessary as I haven't needed to do it on my laptop.

Other suggestions include disabling outbound scanning, but that's a fudge and not something I had to do..

As a first step I'd suggest checking the Email Scanner permissions in ZA (might even be worth removing and letting ZA prompt you again to add), and setting ZA to display all alerts as a debugging exercise.

That a lot of info and some of the problems seem very familiar, including the mention of changing IP address for my ISP's mail server,
Currently I have to reduce internet security in ZA to medium for email to work at all.
I wonder if I have been try to add the programs into the intenet zone and should be the trusted zone, I will check this.

I haven't added any programs into the Trusted Zone on ZA Pro (I run that on my desktop as part of a very paranoid system).

I'd suggest monitoring AVG and ZA logs whilst doing the following:

1: using ZA's prompts to reconfigure permissions for AVG to start with (by removing AVG from program permissions and setting ZA to prompt)
2: if 1 fails, try adding the ISP mailserver to trusted zone.

An easier way to view ZA logs is to download and install VisualZone, a free log parser.

Ah I see we have an AVVG Forum now , but may be best to conclude this here

I tried taking The AVG email scanner back to ASK in ZA
ZA re-detected it and I re-applied the permission, but this diddnt change anything.

I attempted to send a message with an attached JPEG, it hasnt gone, its still in the AVG QUEUE folder.

I have trimmed the AVG log filebut its still too long to be posted here so I have put it online so you can download it
emc20050321.log and the ZA log zalog.txt

I've had a look at the logs Steve, and nothing leaps out at me as an obvious problem.
The only difference between your AVG Email scanner setup and mine that I can see is that I do not use the Automatic Proxy Servers setup by default. Perhaps you could try setting up a specific SMTP server to your ISP mailserver (as per AVG help instructions) and using that as a test?

Cheers tazuk
I have entered the my ISP's SMTP server and turned off automatic in the email scanner, as you suggested and this seems to have done the trick.

Brilliant - particularly as I was running out of ideas [smile].

Happy scanning Steve.
