Email Address

I don't care to check the validity of the string for an email address such as using reg expressions to find @ and . etc, but I do care if the actual email address entered exists.

Is there any way to use some sort of tool to see if an email address actually exists somewhere???

There used to be a custom tag on the Macromedia Exchange that would do this, you may want to check there and see if you can find it.

Where do I start to look to find that?

I'm not familiar with Macromedia Exchange.

We use a java tag from activesoftware

http://www.activsoftware.com/email/verify/

it can do a load of things such as:

Syntax Check
DNS/MX Record Check
Top Level Domain Check
Mail Server Check
etc

The safest way to verify an email address is to actually send an email to that address with a link in it to verify it and register it with your servers.

This stops the following problems:

1. Makes sure the user actually OWNS that email address ( in a crude way )
2. Some servers will not tell you if a email account is bad or not.
3. Provides an additional opt in option in case someone tries to register an email address that they do not own ( in order to make them receive unwanted email/spam )
