Have a BCM 400 rls 4.0 used to be able to get in remotley till my pc crapped out. Have loaded new E.M. from Nortel site, have dial in number and passwords. The dial in works fine connects and stays up, but when I then open E.M. and try to connect I get a "cannot determine device type" and the connection drops? Any ideas, this site is 3 hours away and I need to get backin to make some changes.

Lol!. The reason is because you don't have the Element Manager cartridge for that site. Normally you have to download them and it's done automatically after you have logged it. If you are on a dial up connection, then it can be up to an hour to download over 7 megs worth.

If you have access to Nortel's software section, then you can download them there. Your connection should still state which cartridge you need?.

So if I just dial in and let it cook is going to auto download? How do i know which cartridge if i go to the Nortel site? Sorry to sound dumb, but this is the only BCM I've ever messed with and never had any training just seat of the pants.

I have dialed in and left it running for 2+ hours and it still fails when I open EM and try to connect. How do I get the cartridge I need? Thanks

As you have downloaded the Element Manager program from the Nortel, you should be able to download the cartridges as well from the software section.

Go to ..

Select the 4.0 / SRG cartridges Library
Download all of the zip files and put them in the e.g.

C:\Program Files\Nortel\Business Element Manager\BusinessElementManager\bin\registry\cartridges
folder.

Give this a try?.

What type of system are you trying to connect to? What IP address are you trying to connect to? Doesn't sound like a cartridge issue

Connecting to a BCM400 rls 4.0 I just used the windows connection program, BCM modem answers ans accepts the user name and password no problem, then launch element manager using a connection to 10.10.14.1

After you dial in check the properties of connection and see what your IP address is. It sounds to me like there is an issue with the IP your trying to connect to.

I can ping the 10.10.14.1 when first connected, then it becomes hit and miss until it fails completely and says "cannot determine device type". I may have to saddle up and drive 2.5 hours each way if I can't get in remotley so what do I need to connect once I'm on site.

Is your data dial up line stable, or does it fail once you try to access it.

You can access the either IP address, LAN1 or LAN2 etc. Also try and select the verify tab instead of trying to connect. If if tells you that you have a BCM present, then use the connect tab.

If it used to work properly on your old PC, it should work on your new one too, so the BCM portion should be ok as well as your PC except for the version of EM on your new machine. When you open it up, on the blue (or purple) screen, right in the lower right hand corner, it should say version 60.2.0. Or you can open EM and click on Help>About. This will also give you your version plus a whole long list of all the cartridges you've downloaded. And at the bottom, there is a bunch of info relating to your version of Java.

I had a similar problem a while back where I downloaded the latest EM from Nortel's website and I still couldn't access the BCM using it. I wound up downloading it from another BCM that was awaiting install and it worked fine. If you have acess to another one, you might want to try doing it that way.

Once you get dialed in to this BCM, if you still need the cartridge, it should come up and tell you right away. By the way, that ip address you're getting is the correct one for a dialup PPP connection to a BCM.

Failing that, you might want to set up a new dialup connection and try leaving all the settings at their default except your firewall. Try turning it off until you figure out what's wrong.

Good Luck.

Another thing that you could try to use is to just use a login of nnguest and a password of nnguest. You can't do a great deal with this login, but as least you can verify that the IP address and Cartridge is OK?.

You just get a basic screen if the login is successful.
