Hi, im new to after effects but i have a problem. Iam currently shooting a machinima production (Basically im shooting video from a computer game) I want to make it look like there are more than one charcter in shot so i filmed two seperate shots from the same angle but with the people in different places. Is there anyway in After effects that i can place the two videos on top of each other to make it look like there where loads of people in the one shot.

Any help is appreciated.

Paul.

Yes, using greenscreen techniques, you can create what is usually referred to as "crowd replacement" (although it's really crowd "creation"). Where you'll actually CREATE a crowd using plates of actors in different places.

The trick is to make sure they don't occupy the same place in two plates.

Ive done this before and I found the most efficient and painless editing technique is to capture a still plate of the background first, layer the multiple shots of the people on top and from there mask out around the people with the pen tool. Which leaves the people standing on the background in question. The pen tool will also allow you to animate the cropped area around the person. Which is great if its a moving object. I'm not sure about your footage being a video game but by the sounds of it you won't have to worry to much about the lighting being a problem. If you were to shoot this as an effect on video (especially outdoors) I suggest doing the background plate first and the secondary plates (the individual people, or objects) second so the area around the people can be feathered to blend in with the variance in light and background.

This is a clip i did with the same idea. (its the same person on the bench shot at two different times)

Hope this helped a lil

Hi, thanks for the help, i managed to do it. I used the pen tool to trim round one of the videos and placed it on top of the other so it gives the illusion thers 4 people on screen.
