Greetings all,

One of my users got married and wants her account name changed. Panic!! I don't want to go right in and change her accound name/Login and her E-mail address before checking on what that might do. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this?

Thanks in advance for any experience passed along.[bigears]

This should not cause any problems at all if you are using exchange 5.5 then you need to update the info there as well to make sure that the primary NT account is the new one, if you are using 2K then you can just change it.

Your other option if you are using the recomended AGDLP for your groups is to copy the account to get a new fresh one with the same permissions.

Sometimes this is a cleaner way of doing it.

Glad to be of service.

Changing the user name is not a problem. However, the e-mail name can be. If you just change the e-mail caaount to the new name, then any mail coming in to the old address will bounce. Instead, add an aslias for the new mail name to post into the old account, that way she will not lose any mail. Does she also want to change her user name? IF so, you may need to copy her old profile into the profile created for the new user to keep from losing her configuration, etc., on her desktop.

Remember the user name and actual users real name are not connected, the system relies on the user account name, not the actual user name. You will need to change the user information in mail to reflect the new name in outgoing mail.

Of course, you could always tell her that she did not get IT approval in advance, therefor the marriage and name change is rejected. :) Would not advise it though!

Good luck.

On the account name just right click and change her information. That is if this is Win2k and you will keep all of her roaming information or local information such as backgrounds and shortcuts...etc.

What happens on the XP or 2000 Workstation, however, where all the settings are in \documents and settings\user name?

All that really needs to be changed is the mail information. It is best to leave the username the same (it is not broken, so do not fix it!).

However, the computer system identifies users by their SID, which is associated to the username, and re-naming the account retains the old SID information, so that should not be a problem either. At a worst case, if the user is logged on to a new user name account, then the old user profile could be copied into the new name account, but that should not be necessary.

The user name forwarded with all mail needs to be changed, and if she wants to change her mail name (depending on the user naming convention being used), then this is best done with an alias on the existing account so mail to her old address will continue to be routed to her, as well as mail to the new name.

Thanks for all the replies. When she submited her request I thought, "Man, that's gunna be a pain in the but." Way to much work for to little result. Well it's gata be done, though I did consider the IT Pre-authoization route. hmmm.

Thanks for all the help
