Editing mail merge main document

Dear friends:

I am trying to edit a mailmerge template. When I go to open it, I get

"xyz.doc is a mail merge main document. Word cannot find its data souce jkl.txt"

[find data source] [options]

I strike "options" and I get [remove data / header source] or [remove all merge info].

I just want to add some text! :O(

How do I effect this, please? Never worked on this before.

Hi,

When you are searching for a data source, Word assumes certain file extension. You will have to FIRST change the Files of type selection to the one for TEXT.

Thanks for your suggestion, but not sure if I understand you.

The problem is that I just want to edit the template, if you will. I don't want to execute the merge at this point. Would just like to get in and change the main doc.

Wow - I guess this is a lot harder than I thought.

I'm surprised: would have expected this would be fairly straightforward. Have not been able to find the answer anywhere.

My experience (although very limited) is that you need to search for and find the data source. Try creating an empty data source file "jkl.txt" and select it.
you should then be able to make any text modifications you need. Make sure the merge field names are displaying before you re-save the whole thing.
