Hello -
This is what I'd like to do...To save time, I want to capture an entire tape in one clip (rather than capturing scene-by-scene). Once the clip is captured (abt 50 minutes), I want to bring it to the timeline and split it into sequences there. What I'd like to do is take the large file and break it into separate, smaller files. I want to do this in case I need to use the clips in other authoring software. I know I'm getting 'virtual' splits, but I want the original file to split into many shorter PHYSICAL files. Can't see anything in the documentation that'll let me do this. Using Premiere Pro.
Thanks

First, a comment. On my system, I can only download video in 20 minute increments because I am running Win98SE and am capped by the 4 GB limitation. If you're downloading 720x480 at 29.997 fps with audio, you're looking at about 10 GB of original video. Make sure your OS can handle that file size.

I'm going to assume you can download the whole video and Premiere lets you import it. Drag the whole clip into your timeline. Then you can use the razor tool to splice the video. Once it's spliced, you can save the individual segments as separate files in whatever format you choose.

Irsmith,
I'm running XP, lots of HD space. I have no trouble saving 60 min clips. Let me clarify...
I do use the razor to cut the clip. It then allows me to move the clip around as though it's a separate clip, but I think it's all done 'virtually'. I've looked all over the place for the option to save the individual clips, but I don't see where I'm offered that option. I see nothing under the /File menu, nor do I see an option to save individual clips when I right-click it. I thought that I did this a few years ago, but for some reason, I can no longer find the option to save the newly razored clips as individuals. I know that this is pretty simplistic, but could you be more specific as to where the option is located? thanks

I know of no way to do this with Premiere - or at least no easy way (you can render each piece you've razored in the timeline but that would take hours). For that matter, I don't think any program will let you do it easily, but...

You can use VirtualDub to split your primary clip into numerous smaller clips fairly easily:

If you've already razored the video in Premiere, jot down the location of the cuts, if not it won't really matter.
1. Open the video clip in VirtualDub
2. Scroll/scrub to the point where the cuts are and note how many frames into the clip they are - jot them down (you only need to do this once).
3. Video->Direct Stream Copy (you only need to do this once).
4. Video->Select Range... and enter the start & duration in frames (duration=frames to end cut-frames to start cut).
5. File->Save As... and select a target file.

You'll need to repeat the process (steps 1, 4 & 5) for each clip in Premiere's timeline. It will take you a while to create the smaller clips but it'll be a LOT faster than rendering them from Premiere.

Geek - Thanks for the info. I'll try it tonight and post the results.

fretmeister,
I am 95% sure this can be done in Premiere (I have 6.5). I needed to to the same thing several months ago and don't remember how I did it but do have the seperate files and I know I didn't render each clip. If I get a chance to look at this and find the answer, I'll let you know.

Thanks Beastdk. Let me know how it goes. I'm still looking for the answer. I've got a LOT of tapes to convert.

fretmeister,
I did find a way to do this.
1. With your project open and the time line cut the way you want it, save the project.
2. Click on the portion of the clip in the timeline that you want to save.
3. From the menu, go to File|Export clip|movie... and save the file.

Hope this helps
