We are about to start EDI with one of our Customers...I need some reference material to answer some basic questions. I understand that there are different numbered EDI formats for different things, but I need some other basic info. Can someone tell me what an ISA Qualifier is? Is this a number we make up? Or the GS Sender/Receiver ID? What is this?

Thank you.

The ISA qualifier and ID are used by you and your partners as communication identifiers(ID's). The qualifier is different based on the ID number you choose. For example, a 12 qualifier is a phone number and your ID would be 10 digit phone number, 01 represents a 9-digit DUNS number, 08 is a UCC assigned ID, 11 is DEA, and on.
The GS number can be the same as the ISA comm ID or different, but make it consistent for all partners and yourself. I use my DUNS numbers for both ISA and GS.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Bob:

Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it. So, does the ISA and GS have to be a number, or can it be alphanumeric?

Can you recommend a book or some sites to go to for general reference questions like mine?

It can be alphanumeric. I'd try to stay away from using a 'ZZ' qualifer because some partners may not accept it, some of mine won't. Otherwise you're free to use a phone number or almost anything.
