Hi all! We are using Version 9.0 (updated version) with the Exchange module and the backup is working fine except I get an "Unable to open the item blah, blah, blah" and it is skipping the edb and the log. Any advice how to get the individual mailboxes?

Phase 2: With the backup of the IIS is it possible to restore individual mailboxes from that?

A couple of things that you need to backup exchange:-

1. You need the Exchange administrator installed on the backup server.

2. The logon that you are using to run the backup jobs must have an exchange account \ mailbox created on your exchange server.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

The administrator account has been set up and has complete administrator rights and privledges. In addition the mailbox has been set up too. Any other suggestions?

Administrator account? You need to install the Exchange Administrator software from the Exchange CD onto the backup exec server.

The exchange administrator module is on the server. Configuration seems to be the root of most of the problems and we went through all that too. Everything was working OK until 2 days ago. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the input!

The edb and log files, I assume you aren't selecting them by drilling down on the drive in the server. They must be selected by choosing the Microsoft Exchange options though as it was working 2 days ago I guess this isn't your problem.

FL22980:

Apologies NortonES2, but with 9.0 you do NOT require the exchange admin tools for exchange 5.5 or the system manager tools for exchange 200 on the media server even if exchange is remote. You also do not need to install a mapi client on the media server again, regardless if its remote. .The remote agent service installed on remotes does the bulk of the work locally.

I also think NortonES2 is correct in his previous post. It sounds very like you are making your exchange file selection by drilling down under prg files\exchsvr\mdbdata\ etc. It also sounds like you are also activating the advanced open file option to try and back it up online. OFO wasnt designed to do this. If you want to do a flatfile backup, you need to stop all the exchange services first. You should select it only via the exchange agent icons in your selection list if you want an online backup
Then again, i could be completely wrong.

Dogmata, no apologies needed. My responses were based on my experience with 8.6, your comments re 9.0 are helpful for when\if I decide to upgrade.
