I bought a ECS K7S5A Motherboard and a 1.4 athlon t-bird processor along with 256 ram and a heat sink and fan.

Already had hard drive, cd rom, and floppy

When i power up...the processor fan starts...light comes on from cd...no sound from processor...any ideas...?

Thanks

-Joe

Clear the Cmos, make sure it is in the correct (running) position.
You didn't mention a video card? as it must have one fitted to display.
I have a feeling that their is a jumper to set memory between DDR and SDRam? on this board??????? not 100% sure on this.
Reseat you memory.
Reseat video card. Martin.
Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.

Martin is right we need more info. but it sounds like the bus speed to the jumper isn't set right. Are you saying that you get no post beeps at all? Does it beep when you try and boot with no memory in it? Does it beep when you try and boot with no video card if you have one?
I know it's fustrating but don't let the computer beat you! Ha Ha Ha
Keep us posted,

Agreed.

You must set front side bus jumper and also DDR/SDR jumper.

Also i dont think you can simply insert your old HDD into your new system. You will need to perform a format and re-install your operating system to acheive credible stability. T3/\/\p()

Thanks for the responses. I reset the ram (sd) and the video card. No Video. No POST beeps with/without memory. No keyboard power. Nothing... But fan does turn on for processor. Hard drive is formatted. As far as trying to fix the problem....cleared the CMOS memory...is in the right position...I only have a 250 watt power supply...could that be...?

thanks

Sounds like one of two issues with Athlon processors and specific motherboards. The ECS board is very stable, imho, but it does need to be setup correctly. Be sure the RAM jumper is set to the proper position. If that is done then find an AMD certified 300W or larger power supply and install it. Low power will really mess up operations.

Is the RAM good? a bad DIMM can be extremely frustrating. The POST won't even beep. Double check in a known good machine. This is not a mothboard issue, bad RAM seems to be on the rise in the supply chain.

Good luck! I have been working on two FIC boards for a year to get one to boot. No luck so far. Yeah, I do enjoy a challenge.

The Ram is good...I tryed it in another machine...Kingston 256 SD Value Ram. I can't find a ram jumper??? Good luck on your two FIC boards.

thanks

There are only two jumpers on this motherboard ... one for clearing the bios and one for enable/disable keyboard power on. This is what needs to be done:

Check to make sure board is not grounding to the case ... best way to check this is to power up the motherboard while it is outside the case.

Try another power supply.

If those two don't fix it, I would call and troubleshoot with ECS on the phone and try and get a replacement. If you had a memory/video card/etc. seating issue then you would get beeps.

We have one of these motherboards with an Athlon 1800XP and a 350Watt PS and I have built a hybrid with this motherboard with a 300Watt PS (parts from an HP 8562 and it works really well). I think a 250Watt power supply should be enough to boot this computer, but it is a good idea to try another one just in case.

FSB is set in the BIOS on this motherboard. If it isn't booting though you don't know if the CPU is reading 1400 or not.

If you have one LED off by one pin it will not post, the fan will spin but nothing else will happen. By LED I'm talking about the pins you have the hd led, reset, power button, etc. attached to and the connectors have to be turned the correct way too. Check your lights on the outside of your case. Power/Hard Drive/Floppy, etc.

Does your hard drive spin???? Does it access the floppy??? Floppy drive light come on then go off??? If it stays on it won't boot because the cable is on backward.
If the hd led is lit all the time on the front of the case, with no flickering the connector is turned the wrong way on the led pins. Turn that one around and make sure the others on that side only are also turned the same way. Look at your motherboard manual and check each and every schematic to make sure you have everything the right way.

It will automatically pick up your ram, ddr/sdram

Troubleshooting can be very frustrating! Don't let it get you down [thumbsup2]

Good luck and I hope this helps a little!

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

Thanks... The power supply I had was not Athlon or amd approved. I needed a 2.03 certified power supply. Now it works great. Thanks for all your help.

Do you guys think that a new Power Supply would help my current prob? I just got a new xp1800 and a ECS K7S5A mobo and i can get thru all the bells and whistles (all the posts) and then then it seems like when it goes to initiate windows it comes up with this message say it found some error and wants to shutdown giving all these codes beneath it.. The Power supply seems to be ok with it all The memory counts up just fine and i get no other errors at first i thought it might be just the fact that i am using my old HDD and it still has all the old OS on it but i have read where it works fine with lot of people
although i may just be hopeful of that anyone have any ideas also i have tried to get it into windows via bootdisk just dont happen Anyone have any ideas I am very stumped!!!

In most cases you will not be able to change your motherboard and still use your old windows installation.
Reinstall windows and all should be fine
