Over the last two days my exchange backup has been failing with the error:

E8601 Failed to connect agent. (Agent=\\exchangeserver\dbaxchg2, EC = Windows error 402: ??[])

The only thing different over the last two days is I installed a test of exchange 2k on a seperate machine(currently using 5.5).

I haven't included the 2k machine in the backup. And it is only on the network as a test.

Any ideas were I can start troubleshooting this error?

What have you done so far?
Have you checked the Backup RPC Agent service? Is it running or not?
Is the test exchange 2k server on the network or not? Did you install Arcserve on this test box as well?

Thanks for your reply GMC.

The Backup RPC agent service is running fine.

The exchange 2k server is on the network and I have installed the arcserve exchange agent on it just to see if Arcserve would be okay. It is not included in the backup yet.

All I have done with exchange 2k is setup a test mailbox in 5.5 then migrate it to the 2k server. The 5.5 server now sends mail destined for this test mailbox to the new 2k server.

The plan is to gradually move all the users over to the 2k server but the backup on the originall 5.5 server is failing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try to disable the ARCServe Exchange agent on the test server and run a backup of your Exchange on the "live" server. I think that you can't have two licenses on the same network. ARCServe will notice that :D

Thanks GSC,

I think the problem I was having was my arcserve account. When I installed 2k it created a new mailbox for this account on the 2k server, then replicated it back over to exchange (I was using a different alias).

Exchange then thought that this account had two mailboxes and disallowed access through the agent.

Deleting one of these mailboxes fixed the problem.

I'll bear in mind the licensing issue for when I start backing up the 2k server.
