I bought a Sun Ultra 10 off of EBay (bad idea?) and it comes up showing an Ethernet address of all zeros. It sees the network fine - an 'arp -a' shows the machine on the network, again with an all-zero Ethernet address.

I get an error during its boot saying:

Invalid format code in IDprom

How do I correct these problems? TIA!

Interesting, I've never seen this before.

It's only a bad idea if you paid loads for it.

Have you tried resetting your nvram??

or maybe just restore the OBP defaults:-

ok> set defaults

What I'd do next is take it to work and wait for a big fault on a sun server and get the Sun Engineer to take a look at it. (only if you have a Sun support contract will this approach work).

Does this help???

I got the machine for $165 :)

What do mean by "resetting the NVRAM"?

Thanks!!

I tried the following:

ok set defaults
Unimplemented action # 1 on object (fffde280) , whose maximum action # is -1

ok

Thanks!

i remember something very old,
my be does not work on your sys,
press AND hold 'stop' + 'n'
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
power off the sys
power on the sys
you are still pressing: 'stop' + 'n'
until the prompt comes, then release
the nvram should be resetted to defaults. -----------
when they don't ask you anymore, where they are come from, and they don't tell you anymore, where they go ... you'r getting older !
