Gday there... was hoping someone might be able to assist me with a problem i've got. I'm a new Pagemaker user (which is probably the problem).

My pagemaker file has 700 pages of the book, with a 60 page index at the end. I have been tasked by the author to go through the index list and reference the page numbers that the index words/names/etc are on.

ie Akhenaten, Pharaoh, 195, 313, 381, 576
Akkad/Akkadian, 138

Currently though, when i use the Find command which only works in the 'prologue view' (i think that is the view name), it finds the word, but of course it doesn't (well i can't see it) show me the page number it is on (it's just one continuous page). Therefore i have to flick back and forth between 'layout' and 'prologue' view and search to find the page number. This method feels very archaic and is extremely tedious, sending me near-on crazy, given its taken me 2hrs to do just the first page, and there's 59 to go (2500 words/places/etc in the index).

Is there an alternate view, which i can use the find utility in that also shows me the page number the found text is on.

or

Is there a way in which i can switch directly from the prologue view where i've found the text, to that same spot in the layout view (rather than the layout view being the same as where i left it)...

Anyones assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, smoker69,

All in one PM file? No wonder you're going bananas.
The usual pratice is to break long documents up in into chapters, and concatenate them using the "Book" facility.

Correct - it's called the Story Editor, a poor man's word processor.

Have look in the PM Helpfiles: Indexes, Contents, and Pagination > Generating an index

Cheers for the direction. I must say that i had looked at the auto-indexing before (via PM help), but because the index had already been done manually, i thought it to be useless. However, i do note that if you do use it (even if there is not intent on using it to create an index), it does note the page number without the need to flip back and forward between story editor and layout views...

My commital to a psychiatric institution has been diverted. Time will definately be saved...
