Easy Update "Table of Contents" feature in Microsoft Word 2007 VS. Microsoft word 2010

I am currently working on a document that was written using Microsoft Word 2007 and I am also using Microsoft Word 2007 to update the document. It is just the way of the workplace I am now in.

I have noticed that the feature of adding nested headers ("subheaders" perhaps) does not work the same as I remember it did with Microsoft Word 2010. Since I am not the original author of the document, I am not sure if the table of contents was set up the right way. So my first question is: How do I see if the table of contents was set up properly in Microsoft Word 2007 to allow automatic updates whenever a subheader is added to the text. There seems to be a number of other things going on with the document that do not seem right. But maybe if we fix this problem first the other issues will dissolve or be lessened.

If the document designer used heading styles in the document, then they will be reflected in the TOC.

Now the issue I have with the fresh document is that when I add a "Heading 1" style in the fresh document, let's say "INTRODUCTION" in the text area of the document, it does not automatically put a "1" in front of the heading. I have cycled through the available styles by clicking on the available styles in the drop down menu under Change Styles -> Style Set and when I do so I can see my heading change color, position and font in the text but it never shows "1. INTRODUCTION" as I expect and want it to. Please help.

Don't believe that you get NUMBERED headings like you described, unless your document has a numbered outline of soue sort.

no, I am looking at an old document that has it. So you can do it.

And adding paragraph style numbering to the heading will cause a nighmarish mess.
