Why would I need to have an internal DNS Server when an external DNS server through my ISP works just fine?

I have an intranet server and can get to it after updating the lmhosts file. Only about 100 PC would need this update.

What is the benefit of an internal DNS server other than faster DNS lookups?

Thanks

You have to update 100 pc's lmhosts file (should actually be doing the hosts file too) today. What happens when you add a server to your network, and you need to update the 100 clients again? What about next week when an IP changes on one server, you need to go to each of the 100 clients again. Having an internal DNS server means no touching of the clients. You only edit the record on the DNS server, and then each client accesses it for name resolution.

How does the internal DNS server interact with the external one? Does the internal replace the ISP's DNS?

No it works with the isp DNS. The internal dns server will serve all queries from internal machines if it does not know the answer then it will forward the query to a forwarder (usually the isp dns server) or a root server.

Cbailey,
To setup forwarders. Goto DNS mgt console. Right click server/properties/forwarders then enter ISP dns. If the forwarders grayed out. Goto "forward lookup zone" then delete then "." there, it will ask u a question blah blah blah but just go on and delete it.

Bill is on the money. Users will notice a faster access to web sites because if the internal dns server doesn't know the site number, it gets it from the external server. The next time someone goes to access that site, it will be in the internals files, and the user will get to that site faster. Good luck.
