Title: Exchange DBagent Frequently Asked Questions
Product: DBagent for Microsoft Exchange for ARCserve for Windows NT
Document Number: 16040
Last Updated: January 26, 1999

Q: Can version 1.0 of the Exchange Database Agent backup and restore Exchange 5.5?

A: No. You must use version 2.0 of the agent (build 53 or higher), which only works with ARCserve 6.5. If you haven't already, download build 620 of ARCserve 6.5. For Exchange Agent 1.0 users, an upgrade to v2.0 is free. The upgrade to ARCserve 6.5 from 6.0 is a paid upgrade.

Q: When I run a backup of my Exchange server, the error "E8604 - Failed to Start Backup, dbname=DBAEXCH EC=Dbagent Error (331) Insufficient Privilege." appears. The account I used for the backup is an Administrator and Backup Operator, and the password is correct. What's wrong?

A: In the ARCserve Server Admin, click on the Admin menu. Select ARCserve System Account. The account specified here should be a user that belongs to the Administrator, Domain Admin, (if you're in a Domain) and Backup Operator groups. Domain Admins should be set as the primary group for this user. NT and Exchange have separate levels of security. The ARCserve user must have a mailbox in Exchange. Ideally, the ARCserve user would be the NT account that installed Exchange. This account has inherently the necessary rights to perform backups. That user must then be given the "Service Account Admin" role at the Organization, Site, Configuration and Server levels. Open the Exchange Administrator. Perform the following steps for each of the three levels: Highlight the level. Click Properties from the File menu, and choose the Permissions tab. Select the ARCserve System Account from the list of users in the window on the lower half of the screen, or add it using the Add.. button. Assign the Service Account Admin. role to it by selecting it from the drop-down box below. Initialize the mailbox by sending a test message

That is just it, there is no error code. The error appears exactly as listed in the title. I copied and pasted it without making any changes.

Thanks,

Joe

I had a similar problem and now have to stop the antivirus software before the backup and restart it afterwards. We are using groupshield for exchange. Maybe you could try this.

I have had a lot of problems with GroupShield, and stopping it allows backups to work. It is very important to stop all anti virus software when doing a problematic backup. Stop the anti virus SERVICE; apply Arcserve Exchange option patches and test. GroupShield also causes backups to run very slowly with DLT drives. Don’t ask my!!

I am having the same problem on my three exchange servers, (Exchange 5.5 sp4 on NT 4.0 SP6a, remote ARCserve 2000 on WIN 2000 SP2) I am using Trend Antivirus scanners, but shutting the services off does change anything. I have re-installed on all servers, used SP3 and applied all post SP3 patches. I am not using the brick level feature, just the directory and information store, but yet this third bogus database that the agent can't backup keeps occuring. I have tried changing service credentials on the Exchange Agent, but nothing. I can get it to work without this error using named pipes versus TCP/IP in the agent configuration, but this method is slow and often fails in the middle. Anyone figures this out, beer is on me.

TricycleAvenger-
try drinking first and then running the backup - ha
does the error occur right away or during the backup? my backup at the brick level always failed on individual mailboxes while my IS backup completed. but now my IS fails right away too. i'm getting frustrated. the only error i get is "failed to read from database" - is your exchange "enterprise edition"?

I had the same error, by adding or ensuring the Dword value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\ARCserveIT\DSAgent\CurrentVersion\agent\dbaexch isExch2000 and set the hex to 1 tok care of the problem. This was done per CA tech support. Good luck!

This should be added to the Exchnage server. I am using Win2k and backing up exchange 2000.

does anyone know where is a list of valid registry entries for the dbaexch key

we think that the message from Hannibals could be relevant for us - except, we are running Exchange 5.5 - therefore, what is the relevant key name of isExch2000

If you're going through what I went through, it's real-time ant-virus software that's causing the problem. I've disabled the r/t scans on my Exchange server and the problem went away.

Hi,
Create a new account to backup exchange, give it all the requisite rights including full exchange admin under delegate control in exchange server manager and then run the
exchange agent configuration selecting named pipes as the
protocol and then create a new backup job and see how it runs.
Thanks

PROBLEM RESOLVED.
Backup Agent RPC Server service on the Exchange Server must be started using the "dbagent" user which is the same as the service account used for configuring the Microsoft Exchange Backup Agent.
All security in the ArcServe backup jobs for the exchange server must specify this same user.

Hi there

When i backup my information stored (3.5 GB)Exchange 5.5 with Arcserve 2000 it shows up as only 4kb on the log file and when i try to restore the information store is shows up as 4kb.
