I received this message during last nights backup

E8601 Failed to connect agent, (Agent:dbaxchg2, EC=402)

Everything worked fine on Monday and Tues. Then I got this error when we backed up our exchange last night. Any ideas on what happened and why all of a sudden??

error 402 comes if there is a wrong security for the bricks level or if your mailboxes are hidden and you are trying to backup internet connectors. also, if exchange is running on a different box then you need to back it up thru the network not thru the client agent. Happiness is a daily decision

Neither is the case, everything worked fine monday and tuesday night. I've checked the security and the mailboxes are not hidden. Arc serve is on the same box as the exchange.

Gary,

If you have Anti Virus running, turn it off during the backup...
Recycle the Backup agent RPC server and you can also set it to start with the account you are using to backup the bricks.

modify the existing job and put in the security once again..

Hope this helps

Cheers

Well thanks for the help guys but you will go huh on this one. OK we upgraded from regular exchange to enterprise over the weekend and after that we couldn't back up the mail boxes. Arc serve had me delete the old exadmin account, and create a new account from scratch giving it all the permissions and so forth. Now it works. Why did this happen they dont know. But now at least the mail can be backed up hoepfully with no more errors.

Thanks :)
