Hi,

I am having real problems with one of my backup's and really need help. I originally had a server which was using two tapes to backup. (DAT tapes in a HP 1533C drive.) Suddenly the job started to run onto three tapes but was not using all the data space on the second tape.

To solve this the CA tech support guy told me too download the device service patch which i did. The next time i did a backup i was surprised to find the job had cancelled itself and had returned the following errors.

E6096 MEDIA ERROR [ABSL: 1030 CMD:Ah]
E3714 UNABLE TO WRITE TO MEDIA (MEDIA: BY mon 2 EC = UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR.

This has been happening for a week now and we have not had a successful backup for ages. I would greatly appreiciate any help given that may resolve this issue.

1. Check Control panel ->tape devices. remove the driver if loaded.
It means ARCserve uses its own driver.
2. Shut down the server and tape library both.Wait for few minutes.
3. Start the tape library first and wait till it completes "inventory".
then start the server but not ARCserve.
4. Run device configuration again and do "auto config".(->programs ->
ARCserve ->ARCserve device configuation).
While running device configuration it asks for dedicated cleaning slot.
Assign any slot if you prefer to have one.
5. Now start the ARCserve services (while starting the tape engine again
ARCserve will do tape "inventory").

Then use the cleaner tape to clean the slots ....

Looks like a H/W error .... DatabaseBaba...

I have looked at your solution and found one problem. I forgot to mention that the tape drive is an internal 8gb DAT drive, the type of drive is a HP 1533C, I have managed to get rid of this message but am still needing three tapes to complete a backup of just under 12gb of data, does anyone know why this happens, i have been in contact with CA and they keep telling me to try quick erase and the device configs but have never been able to solve the problem.

Jelley, HP's C1533a (not 1533C!) is a DDS-2 drive. The DDS-2 specification can only store up to 8GB if compression is enabled, otherwise it can only store up to 4GB. It seems to me that you have compression disabled, and it needs to be enabled.

I found information about your drive at this web page:
