Hi,

I'm running into the above problem on another one of my recent ARCserve 7 installations, and unfortunately it's another one that CA Tech Support have been unable to help me with.

It's a NetWare 5.1, SP2A server (we were having the same problem with SP1). We are running ARCserve 7 Enterprise Edition. The server backs up itself and a second server, a NetWare 4.11 box with Service Pack 9 installed. Both servers are on the same LAN.

The server backs itself up without any problems. When it tries to backup the remote server, we get the message "E3034 Failed to get connection 27's information", and the backup fails for the remote server.

Occasionally we try it again and it works for a few days, but the problem always returns. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Are you running any other agents on the servers?

Mark ;-)

No other agents are running on the main server, which is trying to do the backup. The remote server runs the GroupWise Agent for ARCserve. I haven't tried unloading it to see if it is affecting backups but will do for tonight.

I've already tried patch LO91560, but I have just applied it again. We'll see if either of these two things help!

Thanks for the assistance.

On the remote server if the GW agent is not the problem try adding the push agent as well. You can run a full functional demo to see if that changes anything. I have basically the same type of backup with one of my remote servers running the push agent and the GW agent. Although CA says you don't need the push agent, I've found without it a variety of problems can occur. I run the push agent on all the remote servers backed up whether NW or NT.

You also might want to patch your NW51 server to sp3.

Good luck,

Mark ;-)

We seem to have resolved the problem.

Both the servers (the server that does the backup and the other server that it is backing up) are in a remote office, at the end of a relatively slow link. We're not having any problems with DS synchronisation or excessive traffic on that link. However, I decided to try moving the master replica from our replica server to the local server that is doing the backup. Since doing that, the backups have worked perfectly.

I don't understand why we need to do this at this site, and not at others, but there we go!

There is currently a CA investigation into why servers running Arcserve and without replicas drop connections and fail to backup. There is a patch due out any time now so you may need to look out for that. "It's true, its damn true!"

I'll keep an eye out for this patch. Despite having the master replica local to the server, the problem has mysteriously cropped up again after two weeks of it working fine. I've also got another new server that I've just installed which is experiencing the identical problem, even with the master replica installed locally.

Very frustrating!
