we are running sco 5.0.6, just the other day the pop3 ability stopped working. I am unable to use an email client such as outlook to get the mail from the server.

if logged in directly to the server, the mail can be sent nd received, but pop3 is not working.

what service controls pop3? and where might it be?

This is defined in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf. The standard utility is "popper". In /etc/inetd.conf, you can configure it to keep a log for review. Also, make sure your root partition isn't full. I assume you'd know that because there would be more symptoms besides Email woes.

Is POP3 dead for all users?

ok, I will check these out.

root partition is at 50%. last week it was at 98% and I cleared it up, that is about the time it started happening.
yes, POP3 is dead for all users.

/etc/services shows:
pop3 110/tcp pop3 postoffice postoffice3
pop3 110/udp postoffice
pop 110/tcp pop3 postoffice

/etc/inetd.conf shows:
time dgram udp wait root internal
#ppop3 stream tcp nowait root /etc/popper popper
imap stream tcp nowait root /etc/imapd imapd

ps -ef | grep popper

shows that popper is not running.

should the # be there in from of the ppop3? and should it just be pop3?

Aug 2 11:14:58 servername ./popper[11734]: Unable to obtain socket and address of client: Socket operation on non-socket (93)

this is the error I get when trying to start popper.

Here is my entry in /etc/inetd.conf:

# pop3 stream tcp nowait root /etc/popper -d -t /usr/tmp/poplog popper
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /etc/popper popper

I enable one or the other depending on my needs to keep a logfile. Your inetd.conf doesn't appear to have an active listing. I believe "imap" is a similar mail service, but I don't know if they are exclusive.

Thanks for your assistance, I was able to figure out the problem.

Bonestein, how did you solve the problem? This could be helpful to all of us.
