I would like to know here to get information on all the discription of all the possible E-commerce interface tools, e-commerce databases and communication software. If possible i would like to know their market shares and strength and weakness of each tool.

Hi,

There are number of tools available for developming E-commerce applications but it depends on the nature of your application to select the appropriate one.

It is very difficult to descibe all of them in this document but here is a synopsis of some popular technologies available.

The following are the major components of the E-commerce Application:

1. Backend Database: it is the core of the E-commerce site so one must be very carefull in deciding the approprite one. again the decision varies on how many users will hit the particular site and what is your budget. The choices are Access, mySQL, SQL server, ORACLE, SYBASE etc.

2. Frontend Application Dev tool: In todays market there are number of soloutions available for developing e-commerce applications. some of them are :
1. Java (Java applets/servlets, Java Server pages etc)
2. CGI (Perl, C++, tcl/tk etc.)
3. Application Servers (Cold fusion, ASP etc)
4. Embeded Application dev (Oracle 8i/Webdb etc.)

There is lot to talk about these technologies but it's very difficult for me to write down all the possibilites.

Anyhow if it is possible for you to describe what application you want to develop then i can help you out in selecting the approprite soloution.

Thanks so much
What about e-commerce packages such as Microsoft Site Server Commerce Edition <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> ?

Using a component solution may be more cost effective than writing your own. More of your effort can be spent getting the site right rather than the database and programs behind it.

However, you will be constrained to the features that the manufacturer provides.

Could someone with experience comment please?

Are there other packages available?
I don't know of any tome that can provide the total ins & outs of e-commerce. This is an exciting and expanding field. I am not experienced, but have had the opportunity to attend a number of presentations on parts of the puzzle. My advice: hit the books and especially the web: microsoft.com, ibm.com, netscape.com, and sun.com among others. Also, especially pay attention to 1 and 3 on Faisal's message. If you believe the pundits, Application Servers and Java are going to be the way the web gets done.

Don't ignore on-line environments where a service company puts together some generic web templates for you and you just have to be the end-designer and ship the product. I was putting in some random 'store'-style web addresses one day and came across one of these. Sorry I don't remember the URL.

Just for fun, when you browse the web, you might take note of all the different file extensions you encounter. Then try to identify the software or tools that were used to create them. In the very near future (some marketeers would argue now), top to bottom e-commerce solutions that are easy to implement will be available. At first they will not be cheap, but the curve should be quick.

If you do find a comprehensive guide, please post it. I think a lot of us are looking for something like that.

IBM web site <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and do a search on e-commerce or e-business. It has some very interesting ideas about E-Commerce. FaisalSaleem in his/her post gave a good overview to the Web side but don't forget the total back-end (HOST/Legacy) connections and processing that are a must for any larger company doing any E-commerce business.

I think the first step is to determine is :
1. what kind of E-Commerce system
- is it B2C or B2B

2. Trasactional base ?
- if transaction is involved, I will suggest going with databases that
support rollback and stuffs.

3. Development language
- depends a lot on development team skills and general direction the
company is going
