Are there any old Telecommunications techs out there that can confirm what E & M stands for? I recall Earth & Magneto; recEive & transMit Ear & Mouth; Earth & Mark (not sure about the last one). If Earth & Mark is correct, where or how did the "Mark" relate to E&M?

I always understood that it was Ear and Mouth. Symbolic of the transmit and receive functions of each wire.

Ditto what himdp says - Ear & mouth. My ear is connected to your mouth/my receive is connected to your transmit.

Thank you for the replies. Sorry, I have not made request clear, I am familiar with E&M technology and have installed both 6 wire and 2 wire circuits. I also know that there were many different protocol settings available within E&M. What I am wanting to confirm is more so the etymology of the words Earth and Mark. I think their may be some older South African Posts and Telecommuincations technicians that are familiar with this terminology.

And yes, Ear and Mouth is the most common known term for E&M
