Hi,
i am using a btvoyager 205 router and have set up the dyndns but it seems to be picking up the public ip address from the router but not the private ip address "if i have it right". so what i am getting when i type my address mydomain.dynalias.net
is the (BT voyager 205 Configuration Manager). i beleive this is a way of getting details about my connection and so on. is there somthing here i can do to forward my public ip to my private ip? "i might be way off if so please say"

if i am on the right track i can not access the advanced configuration section. it asks for a user name and password.

well i better stop as i am not sure if am on the right track. can anyone help

Many thanks
shane

Is this a new configuration? How do you connect to the internet? What are you trying to do? Just need some info. Good luck.

Hi!
I would rather say that configuring/troubleshooting the name resolution in your case your Public FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name - mydomain.dynalias.net ) should not be the first step in the whole process.

First I would make sure that the Web server which is behind the voyager 205 router is working and you are able to open the pages from another machine inside for example.

Then I will configure the Router to forward port 80 (if you intend to use the default and standard port 80 for your WEB server) and try to access the web server from outside by using the public IP of the voyager router. You can find out the public IP (I guess that you are not using a static Public IP if you are using DynDNS) by using one of the many websites like:

Very often DSL providers block port 80 (like Verizon) – if this is the case you will need to use a work around (this is called Web Hop service in DynDNS).

If everything works fine till now then you can proceed with the registration at DynDNS. Configuring the registration to DynDNS on the router is a good approach though not always it works – it totally depends on the router that you are using. I’ve been trying to do this with some cheap router before and I could not make it work. Another approach would be to use DynDNS client running on your server. The important thing is to be able to register the Public IP at DynDNS. Normally I check the result of the registration with nslookup. I set the name server to be queried to one of the DynDNS servers “server ns1.dyndns.org”. Then I simply type the FQD name of my web site and compare the answer of the query with my real Public IP.

Basically this is all. Good Luck!
