Dynamic DNS with static IP

Hi All,
I have a computer having static IP configuration ( without DHCP). And if this configuration is changed, should this information be updated in the DNS server?

In short, does Dynamic DNS make sense with static IP configuration?

Any comment in this regard is highly appreciated.

Yes a DNS entry makes sense with Static IP. On the DNS tab of your workstation there should be a checkbox that states "Register this connection's addresses in DNS. If you change to a new static IP the changes will be dynamically set in DNS.

Just make sure that the DHCP client service on your workstation is still running (services control panel). It may not be getting a dynamic IP for you, but it's still used for DNS registration...

But i dont understand need of DHCP server here.

I will elaborate on the scenario a bit:
I have proprietory implementation of DHCP client running on a machine .

There is an application which allows user to :
a) enable or disable DHCP
b) if DHCP is disabled, configure LAN interface manually (without using DHCP server )

Case 1:
=======
DHCP is enabled using the above application.
Here when the DHCP client receives the LAN configuration from DHCP server, it sends the dynamic updates to DNS server.

Case 2:
=========
DHCP is disabled and user configures the LAN interface manually. And he could do this often. Now should this information be sent to the DNS server ?

What OS are you running on, and what are you using for a DHCP client service?

On a WindowsXP client, for example, you can configure it with a static IP address and the DHCP client service still serves to register the address with DNS, even if a static address is used.

I am running my proprietory DHCP client implementation as well as as the application I mentioned earlier on LINUX machine.

Well, DDNS from a static client depends on the behavior of your DHCP client. My general assumption in your case is that it won't work and you'll have to manually register the address for this client in DNS.
