I have a client who just got a Direcway 6000. They have two laptops running XP (home), an HP and a Compaq presario 2100(celeron). The Hp connected up to the DW6000 worked right away, the Compaq laptop never worked. Best Buy swapped out the mother board, I've upgraded the network drivers, etc, and it just doesn't seem to get an IP address from the DW6000.

I can set the Compaq to the same ip that the HP has (only connecting one machine at a time over a cat 5 cable) 198.162.0.3, dw6000 is 198.162.0.1, and I cannot ping the DW6000. XP does recognize a physical link when I plug in the ethernet cable, but won't make a tcp/ip connection. I can plug the laptop into the other laptop using a crossover cable, set the ip of the compaq to 192.168.0.4 and I can ping the HP laptop from the Compaq and vice versa. I can access the DW6000 built in webserver from the HP, but not from the compaq.

The one unique thing about the HP is that it has bridged network connections set up - between it's built in wireless card and its built in ethernet card. There seems to be no way to set up a bridge on the Compaq, as it only has one network connection, and I would think that should not be necessary - the DW6000 has DHCP running and the HP has no trouble getting an ip from the DW6000...

Sorry to be so long winded. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same system. Do you have the DW6000 connected to a switch/hub and then to the multiple computers or to a router and then multiple computers. My understanding is that the DW6000 will only provide one IP address as it only has one port. I have my system hooked into a router which then handles DHCP for the rest of the network and this works fine. Here are some solutions to try:

Is the compaq (the one I assume is having trouble connecting) also set up as a DHCP server? This is possible if you had an existing dial-up account you were sharing out from that computer. If this is the case, it is an IP conflict because if WINXP tries to handle DHCP, it will always give itself 192.168.0.1. Make sure the compaq is configured to get a dynamic IP and when it's plugged into the hub/switch/dw6000 right click on the connection and "repair". See if that helps. If it is connected directly to the DW6000, it should recieve an address of 192.168.0.2.

If the above doesn't work and you have a small router (most wireless access points are also routers and hubs and switches are becomming less common) try connecting your compaq laptop to the router and set it up to recieve a dynamic IP address and make sure the router is set up as a DHCP server. you may have to set up your router using the HP if to eliminate all other possible faults. If this works, simply connect the DW6000 to the router via patch cable to the "uplink" port and the gateway and DNS server should be automatically be relayed to all computers connected to the router.

Let me know if any of this helps. If you are still having trouble, post what router/switch/hub you are using and perhaps I can provide a better suggestion.

What ultimately happened with this problem was that the client replaced the New HP with another one. The problem, I've since figured out, after encountering it again a few times at other clients, is a corrupt TCP/IP stack in Windows XP, which can be fixed with a Microsoft tool you can download, or sometimes by uninstalling TCP/IP and re-installing it.

Thanks for your response, I know it was a year ago.
