DVD ?

I have a new Sony Camcorder. I bought first the DVD Sony which never did get one that works so then I went to the Digital camcorder. Anyways I can hook this to my PC through USB\Software that came with it. But I want to be able to burn the videos I have to a DVD. Somebody told me I could really use a CD Burner instead of getting a DVD burner, is that so? I guessing the problem there is size of course would be way less on a CD.
Please give some advice on what to purchase out there.

You can burn video files to CD, and you can burn VideoCDs which will play on some DVD players, but to burn a DVD, you do need a DVD burner and appropriate software to drive it.

To be honest, CD burners are now outdated technology and unless you are very short of money, it is worth splashing out a new DVD burner and appropriate software.

No I would rather keep up with technology and go with a DVD burner. I guess I have only used my CD burner to burn data.
Then what I hear about buring a DVD burner, is to buy a combo that can do -/+, is that so?

It depends. Combo drives aren't much more, so it makes sense. However, going with a drive that can only do one isn't going to be the end of the world, since either format is about 90% compatible on DVD set-top players. Each format covers some set-top players that the other doesn't, but a majority is overlapping.

But yes, you'll want to go with a DVD burner so that you can preserve the quality of digital video. Otherwise on a CD burner, you're really restricted to MPEG-1 for VCD's which is slightly worse than VHS quality. SVCD (Super VCD) is also possible with a CD burner, but you have even less space and not many DVD set-tops can play it.
