I have bought a DVD writer PX-712A made by Plextor
It worked very well until yesterday
Suddenly instead of writing a DVD+R in 7 min now it takes 22 min
I reinstaled Nero but no change
Also I have noticed that buffer level when it is writing is changing very fast (2 times per second)(for example: 99% then 32% then 3% then 82% and so on)
I have also observed that it takes all the ram memory of the computer
I have XP SP2 1028 MRAM, 2.8 gHZ 160GB HDD
What should I do?
Thanks

Did you make any software or hardware changes to the system?

You could try disconnecting the burner from the system, boot up, turn system off, re-connect burner and then boot up and try burner out again.

Also, update your AV program and do a virus search, and then run Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder to remove any spyware.

If no luck, then do a clean boot:

If that does not help, then install the drive in another system.
If the same problem exists there, then it may be defective.

This, perhaps, should at least be said. You have your settings to check out before you burn. Make sure you have checked them out thoroughly. There is the speed setting, but there is also the setting where you decide wether you want nero to verify all it has done or not, that can drastically change the amount of time it takes to finish a burn completely.
Also, did you do the burn thru nero burning rom or nero express, only reason is that perhaps the settings could have been different if you burned thru a different method each time.
Just covering all the bases is all.

I forgot, there is another factor.
I have found that nero takes much longer to burn mp3's and also longer to burn folders with a lot of small files in it.
I had one that took forever to burn in nero as it was a folder with approx 9500 individual text files. It was a list of words to songs with each song have its own separate file, thus 9500. Nero took forever to burn this and i mean forever. In your post you mentioned 7 min opposed to 21 min.
In my case it was more like 7 min opposed to 47 min. But the next burn was a copy of a prog and it went the normal speed.
So we should have got this part out of the way first. There may be nothing at all wrong with your burner. And, of course, Plextor is about the best to begin with. Not to say there isnt a prob, but maybe not.

Hey DanPopescu
I have PX 712A and same problem as you had.
Here is the solution,
First I did a clean boot
but I didn't burn right after I restart my computer
I went to Plextor, and updated the firmware of PX712A
I think the new firmware helps
I don't have this problem anymore, I have burn 20 of the DVDS and working just as good as when I first used it!
here is the link for the new firmware
