DVD ROM not refreshing problem

I have a DVD Rom drive when I place a disk into it works fine, but when I put in another disk, it thinks that the last disk is still in the tray and it will display the disk contents.

The only way that I can switch disks (say PSP20 and put in a BF1942 play disk) I have to reboot.

Any help or clues on why this is happing?

Tom

Forgot to mention, Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and all current updates.

Hi all

Interesting to find this as i have two XP PC's both doing this in slightly different ways - started in the last few weeks

PC1 has a toshiba DVD ROM which wil not update the left(disk title) or right side(files) of explorer when a new disk is added. I have done the microsoft autoplay wizard and settings to death and un/reinstalled the DVDROM and entire IDE channel drivers. No joy. Also uninstalled my CD writer software (record now 6.7.1) without joy (having failed to find the reinstall disk for some time :).
A USB DVD writer is completely unaffected by this effect
Interestingly my DVD player software (cyberlink) will spot the new disk, offer to restart where it left and play the new title while Explorer determindly insists the old disk is still there!

PC2 is a different motherboard, generally different build etc, no DVD writer at all. There the left side of explorer is stuck despite refreshing re-opening etc but the right side does update. Unfortunately the left side seems to control autoplay so DVD's wont auto play if the last disk was an audio one.

There seems to be a run of similar queries on the web starting mid August. Has anyone else got Norton NIS, Acrobat 7.0 or messenger 7.5 which are the only updates I recall both machines have had except Microsoft update ones?

Hardware (like make/model of the DVD-ROM drive) might play a factor, but more importantly, it depends on the applications you "leave open" when switching discs.

If you have all programs closed, including Windows Explorer, then switch discs and the information does not update, it's probably a limitation within that drive's firmware.

The workaround that works for me when I come across that situation is to right-click the DVD-ROM drive in an explorer window and choose Eject.

[tab]Note: This workaround does not work when other programs
[tab][tab][tab] like PowerDVD or WinDVD are locking the drive

Thanks cdogg, Spent half a day on this and now well into it in an obsessed sort of way :)

For the record I decided to follow the hypothesis "it's NOT the drive as the DVD player software spots the disk swap (means the eject notification DOES work - although right-click>eject had NOT helped to update Explorer ) and it plays the new disk (not a cache pileup or reading error)".

Following that theory I reinstalled the IDE and DVDROM drivers a few more times for fun and luck and then had an uninstall-fest on everything that could get it's hooks into the Explorer shell.

Uninstalled in order (I did not reboot between stages but did test between stages so I include this full list just in case it was not the final uninstall . . )
WindowsBackup
MyDVDLE
DivX player
Unchecked windows CD burning the USB drive recording tab (NOTE The Recorder was NOT the drive I was having troule with but I'm trying everything)
No joy so far
Uninstalled Musicmatch Jukebox10 and rebooted
Problem gone, no trace of previous issues and [boot to google homepage open] (my personal startup benchmark) down to 1min40 from 2mins 40
(System is fairly heavily loaded with USB devices etc but I was getting round to looking into this slowness anyway)

This is good apart from the other PC doesn't have Musicmatch Jukebox and never has. Tomorrow I'm having a go at that one !

Hope this thread helps someone else

Well, glad to hear you got one solved!

I also found a fix for this, I had nero installed, uninstalling it fixed the problem. Go figure.

Hopefully the Last word on this but as there is little on the net describing anyone actually FIXING this issue I'd like to leave a note for the next sufferer :)

Problem: DVD drive contents in explorer window populate with first disk inserted but do not update or refresh with new disk insertion. USB Drives on the same system unaffected. Explorer windows continue to show old files when new disk read even as you click down through directories or have used eject command to open drawer.

ThirdParty Videoplayer /music applications can recognise the swap and play the new content even as Explorer is insisting in great detail that the old disk is still there:

PC#1, My problem is very repeatably linked to install of MusicMatch Jukebox 10. Install Jukebox 9 it is fine, update to V10 again in clean standalone install or internet update and the issues come right back.
(cdogg Thanks - I found other references to early versions of nero doing this but I've never used it and it's not on this system which uses MusicMatch or Record Now for burning. Wonder if they share any code?)

PC#2 Similar but less severe probs afecting left hand (folders) window only, were resolved by removing multiple versions of MSN messenger and windows messenger (thanks Kids) and running the Microsoft Autoplay Wizard which found a minor (possibly unconnected) group policies problem in the registry although Autoplay ran before making the registry change.

Thanks to those who have made suggestions to me and elsewhere in this thread

Conclusion: NO single cause/solution for this issue found here or elsewhere on the web,
Recommendation to others : After the usual DVD-ROM driver updates/reloads and windows system file checks/cleanups
* Try the Microsoft Autoplay wizard (search in google) and * If all else fails then try to reduce the number of installed programmes that might need to hook into the Explorer shell for WHATEVER reason until it goes away then build back to find a culprit /last straw. Suggested Culprits/'last straws' may include multiple MSN messengers, Nero and Musicmatch

I am left wondering if there is actually some limit on the number of external hooks into Explorer before it grinds to a halt as there seems little in common between the programs that have been cited as having pushed systems 'over the edge' and clearly all these programs are working fine in other situations for many other folk.

If anyone can add anything more Please do!

For what it's worth:

I've got the following installed on a multimedia workstation I setup recently:

- MusicMatch Jukebox 10
- Nero 6 Ultra
- Roxio Easy CD 6 (came with a CD burner)
- PowerDVD 5
- Windows XP SP2
- CD-RW drive
- DVD+/-RW drive (each have their own IDE channel)

I have not had any issues with CD or DVD swapping, except for when I leave PowerDVD open. If I swap a DVD, sometimes PowerDVD will not see the switch and want to resume from the last point it stopped playing the last DVD that was in there. Then if I hit menu, it goes to the wrong part of the disc (it's still using the old TOC from the last disc).

I don't allow Roxio or Nero to run in the background. Other than the issue above, I haven't had many occurrences of this problem.

So to me, the problem will vary from PC to PC. But I think it has little to do with the hardware configuration or how many "hooks" are into the Explorer shell. Instead, it has more to do with the configuration of the apps you are using in addition to the ones that are running agents in the background. Spyware/adware infections and a PC that has been going for months might not have as much luck I suppose...

The Autoplay wizard fix is an excellent suggestion too (from BrucesXP). I forgot about that one! It is without a doubt a good place to start.

I have tried the Autoplay Wizard, but it did not fix my problem.

I know it's not a hardware/firmware issue because I boot to windows xp 64 bit without any nero, powerDVD, musicmatch etc installed, it works fine.

I have seen reports on orther board that it might be related to nero's image ready, but I really can't find a solid answer on that.

ComputerDoc2,
Yes, in a nutshell, you've illustrated my point. The problem usually has to do with the applications installed and how they're configured to run, which is why you have no problems in XP 64.

However, just having certain programs installed doesn't necessarily mean you will have problems. That's why I used the PC above as an example to show that.

It's always best to make frequent images of your hard drive, so you can go back if things start acting up...

Ran across this the other day - "CD Won't Refresh"
KB 817357. Don't know if it will help, I was looking for something else when I saw it.

Hi,

had the same problem,
uninstalled Musicmatch Jukebox 9 and Nero Digital. The problem was still there.

Then I found in xp-AntiSpy the "No Autostart for CDs" checked! Unchecked this one, the problem was gone! Hurray! This worked for me!
