Planning to get a new computer put together in a couple of weeks. Has been suggested I get a combo CD-RW/DVD dual layer drive. I can't find any info on media used. All DVD disks I see state capacity as 4.7gb. Can't find much on the theory of "dual-layer." Does it use the 4.7 gb disk, but write the data differently?

Is the DVD drive worthwhile as a back-up drive or better to get an external USB drive like I have for my other computer?

Thanks

DL (dual layer discs) are not commonly available at the moment due to their high price but it's nice to have the option on the writer for when prices do drop over the next few months
We had our first batch dellivered last week, we havn't sold one box yet but then they are 4X more expensive so it's not suprising I guess.
Personally I would say DVDRW is fine for a monthly/weekly backup but external HDD is far more convenient if you are intend backing up more regularly than this and obviously a lot quicker.

Thanks Paparazi for your great reply. I suspected as much about availability of the DL media, but, like you said, if I'm putting together something new, might as well have the capability when available and price gets better.

I really like the external USB drive. I have a Simple Tech 120GB, USB 2.0. I back up close to 5 GB weekly. Also keep all our digital photos on it. More versatile than 2 internal hard drives. Been burned too many times with failed drives.

Yes indeed, the thing I like about external USB HDD's is that once you have carried out the backup it can be simply turned off, which increases it's life and protects the data from corruption.
