Good evening!

Suddenly, whenever I put a DVD into my DVD burner and try to see what's on it, I get a message saying "K: is not accessible. Incorrect function". This includes many old DVDs which used to work in it just fine, and DVDs which I have just burned on the same burner. The same drive reads CDs fine, and can apparently write DVDs.

What is wrong, and what do I do about it?

Thanks.

I'm thinking it might be an issue with Autoplay in Windows, which impacts detection. It can get hosed by 3rd-party apps. Go here and run this fix:

If that doesn't work, see what happens when you leave the DVD in the drive and reboot. When Windows is back up and running, see if it can read the DVD without opening/closing the drive.

I can't use that gadget, since I'm running Win2000, not XP or 2003. In any case, I don't believe that it's a problem with auto-detection: the problem isn't that it can't auto-detect; the drive can't read DVDs at all, under any circumstances.

It is not uncommon for combo drives to lose one functionality or the other, in this age of inexpensive drives sometimes the best solution is to simply replace the drive.

and can apparently write DVDs

Since you cannot read them how do you know? [smile]
