Do you have more than one DVD-ROM drive installed in the PC? If so, have you tried playing the DVD-9 disc back on both?

What you've described shouldn't matter if it's a DVD-5 or DVD-9 disc. It sounds more like a configuration issue with the drive itself. If it doesn't have an analog sound cord running directly to the sound card, then the drive must have "digital audio" enabled in Device Manager.

actually i only have one dvd drive in my laptop but i have another dvd drive in my pc and it played there. Does regioning affect this? im not sure about it myself, but might be one consideration.

OK, now I'm a bit confused. You never mentioned that you were working on two different workstations - PC and Laptop.

Can you describe exactly where the problem is? Is it on the laptop or desktop for one thing? And if it's the laptop, do DVD-5 DVD's work there?

One last question, are these store-bought or burned DVD-9 DVD's?

It's like this. Since the dvd9's dont work in the dvd drive in my laptop, i decided to test it in my dvd drive in my pc. It worked im my pc, i was able to view the dvd movie. These are store bought dvd's and Yes DVD5 works on my laptop and my pc as well. Thanks for helping me out here.

I do hope we can solve this as I carry my laptop with me whenever im travelling and its quite frustrating when I bring dvd's that it cant play (i usually watch dvd movies during road trips to while away the time and currently DVD5 is fast vanishing).

I notice that in my DVD setup (desktop), you are supposed to set the region. You are allowed three changes to this setting, and then it's permanent. I left mine un-set, so I won't have this problem. Is the region "set" in the laptop DVD player section?

micker377,
You left your DVD-ROM drive "unset"? Are you sure you're talking about the DVD player or a DVD disc? I know you can make region-free discs, but I'm not sure you can do that with the drive. It must be set for a particular region before it will play DVD discs, at least that's the hardware specification most manufacturers require.

Biggie,
Not sure what else to suggest. Since the DVD's are store-bought, this shouldn't be a problem (assuming the DVD's are all from the same region).

sounds like you've got some missing audio codecs...

since it's a store bought dvd, it's probably the AC3 audio codecs that's missing.

you can download them free in lots of places.

Also, you should try other popular codecs, like the mp2/4 codecs...

Frankly, this shouldn't happen at all, all dvd's should play fine since they have exactly the same audio format, the powerdvd versions only improve the actual software of the player...

eh, when I say same, I of course mean a few set standards that all popular soft/hardware players support...

cdogg:
It's a BTC IDE1108 internal drive. So far I've left the properties > region "unset" (shows 5 changes left). It's played all discs I've put in.

Micker377, guess you've got one of those exceptional DVD-ROM drives that doesn't have to play by the rules! Either that, or you're using DVD playback software that gets around the region setting.

Here's more info for others that are interested:
