Hi All,
I am kind a newbie in configuring cisco switches.
I was playing around this model cisco 2900 series switcehes.
As i dont know the password so i had to recover it and follow the instruction given in the cisco web site.

while doing that at one point i stuck.

After issuing the command
copy flash:config.text system:running-config
i was suppose to get configuration file loaded with next switch prompt switch#
but i get these messages
================================
*Feb 28 %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface fastethernet0/1, changed state to up
*Feb 28 %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface fastethernet0/1, changed state to down

* %sys-5-config:configured from by
DFW_USDATA_FLEX_MS con0 is now available

press return to get started

without resetting password why it taking me to password prompt?

Can any one suggest? did any one get the similar situation?
Help is appreciated.

Mushfiq

Dear Sir,

Thanks for reply.
I already told in my post i follow the same instruction
and stuck in that 12th step that i alredy mentioned.
I am again posting from that instruction where i was actually stuck the following....................

12.Copy the configuration file into memory.

Switch#copy flash:config.text system:running-config
Destination filename [running-config]?

!--- Press Return or Enter.

1131 bytes copied in 0.760 secs
Sw1#
The configuration file is now reloaded.

Can you please give me idea why is it showing like that?

Thanks sir Again

Mushfiq

look into step seven:
rename flash:config.text flash:config.old

Ok in step seven everything went right i assume as from the result what the command to be put and what the output to be come.
BUT there is one thing i suspect that is it also said
the config.text file contains the password,
which password the existing one or the new one which is about to be set? If it than i did not configure any .text file in the switch. Do i have to write any text file also?
i dont think so.
Than why is this line?

switch: rename flash:config.text flash:config.old
switch:

!--- The config.text file contains the password <<<<<<< this line
!--- definition.

Sir we are close but not yet. not yet

After you rename the file and issue the boot command it will come up as if it were new... Following the steps puts you into enable mode this allowing you to change the password in global config... Make sure you SAVE your config when completed...

You rename the config.text to config.old, reboot the switch, then you get

switch>

then you do this

switch>en

switch#

There are no more passwords to enter at this point. You can then

switch#rename flash:config.old flash:config.text
switch#copy flash:config.text system:running-config

Then you're good. After the "enable" command, there are no more passwords to enter---you have bypassed all passwords, and when you copy the config into the system, you are at the priveleged exec prompt...

Thanks Burt,
You clear my concept.
Yes now i can put cinfigure command.

But i am suffering thru new problem should i post new thread for it?

It is when i go to configure mode
by
configure terminal

and issue
vlan 2 (as i want to configure Vlan on switches)
i get this error
% invalid input detected at '^' marker

what do i do now?

Again i appreciate all for answering.

Thats an old switch circa 1995 and not how you create vlans. At the main prompt follow this

switch#
type vlan database , hit enter
type vlan 2 , hit enter then type exit

This creates vlan 2 on the switch .
