I have a W2K server and I am trying to change the NIC. When the new NIC is placed in the server and configured, I get "Duplicate Name Exists On The Network" during boot. The server's name hasn't changed, only the NIC. (The IP is the same as well.)

Any ideas?

TIA

check if WINS is running on this network. the server's net bios name is associated with the MAC address of the old nic.

is this a new NIC?

Wins is not running....DNS/AD is.
This is a new NIC.

I think the server is reporting itself as being the duplicate name. Could this be?

did you try unjoining from the domain before installing the nic, or maybe even unjoining then changing the name, install the nic then rename and join to the domain.

Check your event logs and see why it thinks a duplicate name exists. What happens if you put the old nic back in. Good luck.
