the 2000 server says that the name is already in use but there isn't one on the domain when you ping the name you want to change it to it gives you the local address and if you ping the current computer name you get the local address i can't figure out the problem

Are you refering to the name of the 2000 server? Have you changed the name of this machine recently or did it occupy a different role in your domain? Are you running Active Directory? Is this the domain controller?

htis server isn't a domain controler it use to be another name untill it was rebuilt now it won't take that name this domain isn't running active directory it is primaraly NT 4.0 Server

did you install windows 2000 SP4 ? before SP4 there was a problem with DNS cache. Eventhough you have IP assigned to the NIC, it does not show.

Check your dns server for a host record with that name and delete it.

Are you running WINS on your network? You may want to look and see if there is corrupt WINS entry for that machine or a duplicate of it and have it deleted

Make sure that the server's NetBIOS name does not match any Workgroup/Domain name elsewhere on the network, also make sure that the name doesn't match any username/groupname.

Have a look in AD and see if the computer name already exsits and if so delete it.
