I have a user who modifies an Excel file, then saves her changes. Doing this creates a duplicate file with the name of 3B7ED000 (no extension). The changes are saved under the original name and in the new file. No other user is experiencing this problem.

Anybody know what causes this and how to keep it from happening.

This user is using Excel 2003, Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for your help

It is normal for temporary files to be created by Excel, but they should be automatically deleted.

The user in question has write-access to the drive/folder in which the file resides (hence the 3B7ED000 file is created), but the user does not have delete access to the drive/folder in which the file resides, so the file cannot be auto-deleted.

I have acutally been a member and light-to-moderate poster since about 2001. Last year my log-in abruptly stopped working, giving me an error message to contact Tek-tip staff. I've emailed them several time in the past several months, but never got any response. I finally created a new login today.

Thanks for the welcome. I've always felt this was a friendly place.
