Hi,

I am very much a beginner at using Access so excuse me if my question sounds a little silly..

Anyway, I have a subform which has a 'RMA number' (which is like an ID number..) Initially I defined the field as an autonumber but this soon became problematic, as I need to be able to replicate the RMA number every now and then..

If it is possible, I would like the RMA number to increase by one with each new entry, so that the user wouldn't need to search through all of the records to find the highest RMA number to date...

Is there any way in which this can be done? If anyone can help please remember that I am an absolute dummy at this so make it simple!! :)

Thanks,
Kat

Well,

Think about it. To always "know" the value, we either need to search for it based on the characteristics or just save it somewhere so that it is 'easily' retrieveable. I the FAQ, the approach is to always save the value in a "table". Of course, it is the (alnost) simplest table imaginable. Two fields. A Value and a date/time stamp for when the value was saved/created. and the date/time stamp isn't really used. In the FAQ, every time the value is accessed, it is "used" only as the basis for generating the next 'value', which replaces the previous value. For the FAQ, the value is either incremented or "re-set" (if it is the first value stored for the month). Look at it again with the 'review' and see if you understand it a bit more.

I looked at it again and managed to create the second table and obviously with the column incremented by one each time it is easy to see which RMA number should come next... Thanks heaps for your help Michael!!
