Did an upgrade from 4.3 to 5.2.

Before the upgrade I had a 3490E tape drive called rmt2 but during the migration, apparently the upgrade process renamed this device rmt1.

I need it to be rmt2! Got lots of programmers (damn typists) who have hardcoded the name into umpteen applications. I can figure out how to rename this thing! Cant copy it because smitty tells me I already have one at that scsi address and rightly so.

I am missnig something obvious I am sure.

to make it simple and avoid messing anything up, why dont you un-cable the drive that you need to be rmt2 , do a rmdev -dl rmt1 and also a rmdev -dl rmt2 run cfgmgr display the tape drives you should only have rmt0 & rmt1... cable up the drive that you want to be rmt2, run cfgmgr and you should be back to the way you were...
