I upgraded a server from nt 4.0 to w2k a while ago and had problems with how the drives were configured. Microsoft was involved and helped get the drives configured correctly. Now looking at my root directory I have two winnt drives (one winnt and one winnt40). I suspect that the winnt40 is the one I want to keep - these are my questions:
1. how can I be sure which directory is the one in use?
2. how can I be sure that the other directory is not being used for anything?
3. what is the safest procedure for removing the outdated one? do I just delete it?
Thanks in advance for any help I get.

To find out which systems folder is in use, open the properties on My Computer.
Click on the Advance tab
Open the environmental variables
Under systems variable - The variable Path tells you which WINNT file is in use.

Once you have answered that question,

run a backup and then you can delete the system(WINNT) folder not in use.

NOTE: Once you start deleting the file and their is a share violation, then the file is in use. (that shouldn't be the case if that file name is under the system variable.
