Yes I posted this thread in video and it wasnt getting anything so thought id post it in here lol. Sorry for the double posting but would like to find an answer to this.

Ok ive been trying to run dual monitor such as having desktop on one monitor and like say put messenger on another however ive not been able to get it to work right. Ive managed to split the screens up via horizontal or vertical. Can clone just fine as well. In fact cloning is what it does and stays at when I try running dual screen like the wizard says. I even upgraded the nvidia drivers to see if that would fix it. It is still doing it.

Both monitors are crt. One is a brand new 17 inch viewsonic while the secondary is an old monitor but good enough for crap task like messenger talking and handling the resolution of 1024x768. Viewsonic monitor is running via vga while other is running dvi to vga converter. Both are connected to the same card.

System specs are 1.9GHz amd athlon xp, 1 gig of ram dual channel. 80GB hard drive space, aopen agp 8x 128MB geforce4 mx 4000 video card.

Anyone have any idea what im doing wrong? Any tips or hints on anything lol?

Thanks

I have WinXP and sitting with the same problem. Nvidia card - trying to setup 2 monitors in dualview. Cannot extend desktop onto second monitor. When I identify my monitors, both show monitor 1. Also mouse cursor goes off the right side of the desktop as if there should be another dekstop, but I can't get to it. Tried everything but no luck.

Well tried the suggestions and still same problem. Tried just installed the minimum drivers by making windows search for the extraxted driver file. Well as usual it thinks both monitors are one monitor. Nvidia quit responding lol.

Any other suggestions ?

im running server 2k3 and windows XP home, in both OS's i see no error with dual monitor, it shouldnt be a problem with any OS. The only thing i can think of is that your card has a problem with two seperate displays, Nvidia cards do get this problem alot, but the ATI cards such as the Radeon 9550 dont get this problem and the software support is better through catalyst, at least in my oppinion.

What im getting at is that if your running an old card at 128 MB, it isnt that great, and you could get one of the newer 256 MB cards for less than $100 US, for quite a performance increace.

Yeah I plan on upgrading as soon as I can but moneys tight right now due to college but yeah I plan on getting 7800 agp sometime when I can. lol If I had the money Id have it right now.

Yesterday I had the issue of my 6200 allowing me to clone or extend the desktop but not to use dual view (never tried before). This morning it seems to be sorted. I think that how I got here is:

Acquired second monitor - connected via DV to VGA converter
1. loaded latest Nvidia drivers
2. Disabled on board video
3/4 rebooted / tweaked with setings (sorry, I can't tell you which!)
5 rebooted this morning - dual view became an option in Nvidia control panel, Change display configuration.

Hope this helps - at least to give you comfort that you might get there despite all the dead ends

Some of the settings I have:

Right click on desktop, nView properties:
Desktop - tick Enable multiple desktops
Windows - I have all three settings ticked (including Enable spanning across multiple desktops

Gavona, appreciate the tips but already have did that several times, installed dual view many of times. Ive tried every step mentioned here at least 3 times lol if not more.

BIOS settings maybe? Under video make the top one primary

There is only one video card on my computer, there is no onboard, im using agp and it is set to agp 8x 128MB card.

have you tried a different card?...you may just have a defective card

Good Luck

As far as cards supporting dual monitor , it is the only one I have for now anyway. When im able to, I will be upgrading to a newer agp card.

One last thing, will both ports display single monitor output properly, assuming only one monitor connected to the card?

In rereading this thread, I do remember having issues with ghost monitors. We had one monitor that it would aways install that didn't exist, and one application we had would always pop a window up on that ghost monitor. We never did get a resolution to that particular issue.

Also, with both monitors attached, are you able to get just single monitor display on each monitor indivually? I am not sure this will help, but sometimes verifying that the hardware sees everything as it should can lead to finding the problem. I also remember something about having multiple instances of the same monitor show up, and having to select the "correct" duplicate as the primary monitor. We never had 8 instances, I think at most was about 4 false instances of the same monitor. Most of them would go away when we got the dual-view going and deleted the false monitors.

Ill give it a try when I can, keep in mind at times, I may be slow replying to this as im busy with college most of the time. I will try what you have posted as this seems to be a intriguing array of ideas. I think I have tried each one by themselves but I dont remember for surely so later on when I can I will try that and all the above of what you have listed. Appreciate the help from all so far.
