Greetings: I was wondering whether there would be adverse effects from combining the use of a 6gb 5400rpm HD and a 40gb 7200rpm HD? Would the computer be running at those respective speeds, or would the 7200rpm HD be running at the slower 5400rpm rate? Thanks!

Nope. A drive spins at it's spec speed, no matter how it's mixed or matched with another drive.
What you're thinking about is drive access times.
If one drive is ATA100 and another drive is ATA33 (optical drives are all ATA33), then the faster ATA100 drive will only operate at ATA33 speeds if it's on the SAME CABLE. Cheers,
Jim

Jim,

The speed thing changes with ATA33 and above. If both drives on the same cable are ATA33 or above, each will be connected at its own speed (saw another post about this and checked it out - its right - assuming 80 wire cable of course).
