i can install two nics on a 98 desktop and have one with the public IP address and the cable running to the sdsl modem while the other has the internal IP and connection to the LAN correct?

IT's a small network and the owner only wants sdsl for himself and doesn't want to purchase a router. This is why only the 98 desktop is mentioned here :)

thanks

You need to install an internal modem in his pc for the sdsl, that way he is the only one who has the high speed internet access. You should also be able to give him a nic so he can be on the lan.

thanks zirelda....actually i went ahead and installed a second nic on his PC with the external IP given by the ISP along with DNS and gateway information. Then on the LAN NIC provided the internal IP with no gateway assigned.

Functioning beautifully.
