Hi there,
My company just recently bought a bunch of the Dell GX280 desktops and they come installed with the HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8082N DVD drives. These are apparently having issues with reading DVDs burned on dual-layer media. I remember reading something on Dell's website about having to upgrade the firmware to make them compatible with dual layer standards. Unfortunately I can no longer find that reference. Anybody have any notions? Thanks!!

Well, most commercial movie DVD's you buy in stores are in Dual-Layer format. The difference is that they are stamped media and work in every DVD player and DVD-ROM out there.

In your situation, I don't believe a firmware update is going to help much. The ability to read burned media depends on the quality and strength of the laser in the drive itself. The first thing I would try is to use different brands of DL media first. If 3 different brands keep failing, and other DVD-ROM drives in other PC's can read them, then I would call Dell about it. At this point though, assume that it's a problem with the media.

hello,

actually the drive HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8082N probably is an lg drive without the label on it in the del system,i would recomment u to contact lg corporation about the issue since it claims that its drives are compatible with al the known formats.

I read something like this with the new Mac Laptops. People are complaing that they conviently only seem to work all the time at full write speed with Apple media. Apparently the latest firmware on these drives fixes this "issue".

Stu,
Are you talking about writing or reading? I've never heard of firmware fixing a "read" issue, but I could be wrong!
