Ok I've gotten yes and no answers on this so I’m going here for a verdict. I have a customer with a PRI and they are looking to add another PRI circuit. There is one COMBO card in the system right now. My question is should I add a service cartridge to the system or do I even need to worry about DTMF receivers with a PRI? There are no copper trunks in the system it will just be the 2 PRI’s.

Signalling is always in bits and packets in the D channel -thats the theory.
If you ask why are there 4 DTMF receivers in the combo card - i know they are not for PRI signalling, but required in case of T1

sorry no concrete answers - you can throw in the services card, if you start getting alarm 63s

this is a good (general) reference for ISDN

Thanks guys, I'll keep searching and let you know if I get anything. I've even spoke with Telco and get 2 different answers. If you would have ask me 3 months ago I would have said that PRI did not need them but now I'm not sure.

I had a customer with 1 PRI and 1 Combo card and they were getting alarms - 63 = insufficient DTMF receivers. I added a service cartridge and that resolved the issue. I don't know if the combo card was failing, but I would definitely add a service cartridge just to be safe.
