I am trying to add a SIP gateway/PBX to our system to allows us to add WIFI phones to our phone system. Our gateway has 8 FXO ports and I was planning on using a few of our spare ATA's to set up analog extensions suitable for connection to the gateway. The connection works, but I have a few issues, the biggest being that no DTMF tones are getting to the Gateway. This prevents me from setting up any auto-attendant features and limits to being able to call only one WIFI phone per ATA.
Secondly, it doesn't appear that the ATA signals a hangup to the gateway, so if an office phone calls a WIFI phone's voicemail, I end up with a 15 second message followed by a click and 10 minutes of silence!
Anybody familiar with this - maybe I should be looking for a different/specific ATA??? I could also use a gateway with 4 FXS ports and trunk the PBX in a similar way as I would trunk to the PSTN.

1 ata,s offer no disconnect supervision...on the out dial try using feature 808 "loong tones"..also in programming set ata for off site
DEFUALT SETTINGS
ATA settings
ATA ans timer 7
ATA use Off site
Msglndicate None
ATA dvc Telephon

The ATA is a Nortel ATA2. Anyone have any idea how I could enable the DTMF tones to make it to the analog device.

VMI (voice mail interface) will pass DTMF, but you will have the same disconnect problem.

also ata/ata2/asm are a single line device and cant handle more than 1 call at a time

without disconnect supervision, how does the VMI indicate to the third party voicemail device that the call has been terminated?
I dont have a VMI adapter so just to clarify, feature 808 (long tones) should cause DTMF to pass through the ATA2?

The only reason I am a bit reluctant to trunk the Norstar to the FXS ports on the SIP Gateway is because it means giving up a few outgoing lines. Im fairly certain they are all used up for access to the PSTN.
I know the ATA2 is a single ine device - but I have like 5 of them at my disposal. I read somewhere about configuring the KSU to "receive tones" as a potential solution to the DTMF <-> ATA issue. Anybody have some more info on this?

Best guess, not enough sales and a desire to encourage people to ditch their third party VM hardware in favor of nortel hardware. Lame.
Update: I have my installed SIP system working - I used feature-808, however I couldn't enable the set to "receive tones" in the programming. I read somewhere that this is a permament solution to Ft-808. Anyone familiar with this? I suspect that my norstar software version doesn't support "receive tones" but I'm not sure.

one other question actually - what support does the Norstar offer in the way of transfering calls to an external line. Can this be done? For example, can a call coming in on an external line be transfered to a call going out on an external line.
