DST update question 1

Although I am somewhat familiar with 2000, my main Windows experience is with Server 2003. I know 2003 servers can get updates but with 2000 I am reading that MS wont send out a patch unless it has extended service. Am I correct in that our servers will not be patched unless we've paid for extended service? Or is MS going to be pushing an update out to everyone?

Really the time change has no affect on us since we don't change time but we have a Sybase server we share with another company in Maryland who DOES change time, I just want to make sure I have my bases covered before March rolls around. I am not going to leave it up to them to patch the server, I want to make sure I do it before March 11 gets here and I have database problems.

I have a VBS script I found that will update the registry, I was just more curious about the actual update from MS. I am not 100% sure what Microsoft means by "Extended Support" is that a paid support? I mean, what I read sounded like "extended support" was only critical updates and no driver, no service packs that kind of support. But then the more I read the more it sounds like a paid support.

If you don't have that many servers to do, the simplest method is to use good old TZEDIT from the Windows resource kit. As far as I am concerned it doesn't take that much more time than performing the registry manipulation and rebooting (tzedit doesn't require a reboot). Hope this helps

Extended Support is indeed a paid level of support only open to Microsoft Premier Support Customers. Under extended support, customers can get support on those products that have fallen out of mainstream support. In order to get Non-Security Updates, a customer must further have an EHSA which is an Extended Hotfix Support Agreement. These are normally very costly and customers would pay $40,000 per hotfix. For the DST issue, Microsoft is only charging Premier customers $4000 and is waiving the requirements for the extended support or EHSA agreement. If the company you work for has a Microsoft support contract, then you will want to speak with your TAM (Technical Account Manager).

Microsoft has published scripts and methods to modify the registry for Windows 2000 machines. I would suggest going that route since it can be automated where TZEDIT is not a very good solution for more than a few servers.

Is this patch a big deal? We have a logon script that runs on our servers which sets the time each time a person logs in. If this script is run on the day that DST takes effect, won't it automatically adjust for the correct time?

FOr me it is not a big deal and I suspect he same for you based on your alias. If you are in AZ then like me you don't observe DST so this won't affect you at all unless your organization also goes beyond the state's borders.

All that said, using script to set the time is not a good idea in a 2000 network. The Domain Controller should be doing that job for you.

I will be in the DST change but we don't have extended support on our 2000 boxes. I have our Domain Controllers set to sync their clocks with an atomic clock every morning so if it does this when the DST goes into effect will this take care of all the time on my workstations? We have 6 servers and they are all in one location and I am trying to figure out how to deal with this or to just live with the 3 weeks that our calendars will be effected and then look at upgrading our servers later in the year when our budget allows.

Please any advice on this would be great.

There is a mis-conception regarding time sources and the DST. Your domain controllers (specifically the one that has the PDC emulator role) will provide the correct time only (regardless of what time zone your client machines are in). Timezone information is NOT propagated by a time source. This has to be modified on each affected machine. Hope that clarifies things.

The link provided by wdoellefeld has information about a script that can be pushed out via GPO if your 2k servers are on a domain. Push out the VBS, reboot at your convenience and you should be ok. Or manually run the script and I don't think you'd even need a reboot.

With only a month to go you don't want to be caught with problems on March 12th. I am going to update all of our servers even though we don't change time, we do pull data from the east coast and with some of the database stuff we have running I don't want to spend a week trying to retro fix anything and play catch up. I don't think we'd have a problem but why take the chance for an easy fix?

Since all of my computers are in the Central Standard Time zone and the program I use is set to the Central Standard Time zone when it goes to sync its time on the date of the change wouldn't it change to the appropriate time and therefore my clients would then sync their time with my DC?

What about the TZEDIT.exe utility I have read about?

I have created the REG file and VBS script as described in KB914387. These seem to work fine in updating a W2K box. However, when I run TZEDIT to verify each zone according to KB928388, the following zones didn't get updated with DST start/end times correctly.

Central Brazilian Standard Time (GMT -04:00) Manaus
Namibia Standard Time (GMT +02:00) Windhoek

Probably not a big deal for most. However, it makes me wonder where the error is. In the REG file, or KB928388? Has anyone else checked the results of the procedure in KB914387 against the list in KB928388?

I inquired about this with the product group at Micrsoft and KB914387 is being updated now. The update should be life within a few minutes with corrected time zone info.

I just took a peek at KB914387. It looks like they corrected the following:
Central Brazilian Standard Time (GMT -04:00) Manaus

I haven't tested it yet, but the reg entries for this time zone are different, now.

It looks like the error I reported with the Namibia Standard Time entry is a typo in KB928388. In this article, the DST Start/End dates are transposed. No need for a correction in KB914387 for this time zone.
