DSL linked to bridge?? 1

Hey guys,

Perhaps someone can help me out? My DSL service will not work unless my router is hooked up? The separate DSL modem won't even work on itself. Unless the router is in the mix I don't get DSL serve.

The problem is I'm trying to change routers. My DSL company is completley useless when it comes to a solution. They claim they don't use mac addresss etc.

Is it possible to make some setting changes for my new router to work.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

this is just a guess

The DSL modem would need a cross over cable to attach direct to a PC: with a router both the modem and PC use straight through cables.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Apparently the DSL company has linked to the settings on the router. Even though they claim they don't do that.

Once I take the router out of the mix there is no DSL service. Even with the DSL modem they provided there is no DSL service. Put the router in and she works.

This is normal.

The router is what actually connects you (as a user) to the service. That's where your username and password are stored.

To set up a new router, you'll need to enter the username, password, and some other variables that are stored in your existing router.

What kind of router do you have?

I have no direct experience with this router, but you should be able to access the configuration through your web browser. although I may have the IP address wrong.

Go to

http://192.168.0.1

try a username of admin
and a pawwsord of password

If this gets you into the configuration, you just copy all the settings and transfer them to the new router.

If this doesn't get you into the configuration, the ISP may have changed the IP address, username & password.

Your DSL connection is probably PPPoE witch needs a username password to logon. Username and Password is usely your primary email address. You need a PPPoE client software on the PC to log you on. XP has a build in client all outher windows 98,ME,2000 needs software client loaded, your isp should supplies. If you Use a router It needs to be setup for DSL PPPoE and your username and password programed in it, the router then dose the PPPoE logon to the modem for you.
