WinXP Home, when started computer, an Icon next to clock on status bar, which is "an arrow and a chip"-it gives the tool tip "safely remove hardware". double clicked the icon, it shows a window "ADSL USB Modem(RFC 2364)" is listed and only Properties or Stop Button are available. Now VC does not wants this icon to be displayed at all however DSL connection must be working. Help anyone?"
 
You could use that "hide" option. It works and will make it disappear for you
 
But as i Said that there are only two options.

Properties & Stop.
There is no hide option.
 
To hide inactive icons, right click on an open area of the taskbar and select Properties. At the bottom of the window, click the Customize button.
