DSL filters?

Verizon sends out 2Wire brand DSL filters for their service, but I seem to find these don't always perform their job. Often I plug my butt set into the 2Wire and still get the warning bleep from it, as though the DSL signal is still being picked up. That shouldn't be. Does anyone have a better source for DSL filters that work consistently?

I just had to tshoot an issue in my house and thought my buttset bit the dust. I also was picking up the dsl on the line post filter. No problems with the house phone though using the same filter. Now i'm going to take my set to test it on a non dsl line to make sure it still works.

the issue you two are having is not with the filter but your buttset. i'm betting you are using a "datasafe" buttset. these buttsets are widely used because they won't disturb the DSL, thus not producing dial tone, just the heartbeat of the DSL modem.

most newer butsets are "datasafe". older ones will pull dial tone but you can still hear the DSL data noise.

when troubleshooting DSL, either shut off the DSL modem or use a cheap civilian phone with a filter!

Yes, I'm using orange Harris butt sets, but their "data safe" feature is supposed to warn when it's detecting DSL--or other high speed data--on the line. With the 2Wire brand filters (sometimes), I get warning beeps instead of dialtone. But if I switch out the filter to another make (e.g.,Suttle or Keptel), the dialtone comes through and there's no warning signal. Wouldn't that tell me that Keptel is doing the job, and the other's not?

well, one would think so if you think about it. we only use a couple different filters including 2wire and they all beep with my harris buttset which is detecting the modem or router.

i simply shut off the modem/router and the problem is solved, no more beeping. other than customer configuration errors, in the 6 years i have been doing DSL, i have rarely seen any filter provided by the IP cause any DSL sync/stability issues.

aftermarket filters (ie. Radio Shack) on the other hand, yes.
